Lewis, who served in Iraq, was with his company when they were 30 meters away from an IED when it was detonated. The explosion caused a traumatic brain injury, and he temporarily lost his hearing and sight. A later X-ray at Walter Reed Medical Center showed scarring in his brain that severely affected his memory.

In addition to the brain injury and cognitive issues, he also suffers from PTSD, Gulf War Disease, plantar fasciitis, migraines, asthma and tinnitus.

For his service to his country, Specialist Lewis is the recipient of the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Good Conduct Medal, NATO Medal, National Defense Medal, Army Service Ribbon and the Overseas Service Ribbon.

Crews will break ground on the new home for Lewis and his family on Friday (Nov. 19. 2021) at 4409 Jack Faulk Street in Murfreesboro. The home will be in the Rucker Landing Community.

The mortgage-free home is built in partnership with national homebuilder PulteGroup’s Built to Honor program and non-profit veteran support organization, Building Homes for Heroes.
