(MANCHESTER, TN)  The Central Tennessee Regional Solid Waste Planning Board holds its quarterly meeting at 6:00 o'clock this Monday (9/11/2022) evening in the Coffee County Administrative Building (1327 MacArthur St., Manchester). The public is welcome and invited to attend.

Board member Donna Barrett told NewsRadio WGNS, "The Monday night meeting is our standard quarterly meeting.  Agenda items include, any cleanup items rolled to this agenda from the last meeting, update on current legal proceedings, any new legislation or new regulation during this past general assembly; as well as a briefing on a recent environmental convention attended by several members and notification of an upcoming recycling convention."

As you recall, this is the group that unanimously voted to stop all waste coming from non-member counties and going into the Middle Point Landfill on Jefferson Pike in Walter Hill. 70 per cent of the waste in the controversial landfill is from outside that area. That board represents Rutherford, Coffee, Cannon and Warren counties. Presently, Davidson, Sumner, Wilson and Williamson counties use the facility.

As you may recall on April 25, 2022, the Central Tennessee Regional Solid Waste Planning Board met in McMinnville and passed Resolution #3. This moves efforts to control what goes into Murfreesboro's Middle Point Landfill, and may extend the life that remains in the Jefferson Pike facility.

Rutherford County Mayor Bill Ketron said, “This stops all trash, especially Nashville’s, from coming into Rutherford County by December 31, 2022.  Now back to looking for the best way to divert our own trash through recycling.”

In earlier WGNS’ broadcasts, the county mayor told of developing businesses that would dramatically reduce our waste through recycling processes.

Ketron noted, “We feel we can divert up to 40 per cent of our waste stream through the right process and proper education! This is what we have been working on for the last three and a half -years.”
