February is Black History Month, and it’s important to recognize the financial barriers that Black Americans continue to face in 2023. In fact, the median income of Black households in 2021 was almost $23,000 less than the median income of all households nationally.

However, the economic environment for Black Americans can vary from place to place.
 
In a new study, SmartAsset analyzed data for 133 locations across the U.S. to uncover where Black Americans fare best economically. We evaluated metrics such as household income, homeownership rate and education, among others.

Our findings show that Murfreesboro ranked among the top five places where Black Americans fare best economically.
 
Our rankings are based solely on economic data and do not take into account the social climate or other factors that may contribute to racial inequality in a given place.
