Rutherford County, TN - Just before the Rutherford County Schools closed for spring break, schools across the county practiced a variety of school safety drills. Barfield Elementary School children were among students at 50 county schools to participate in the school safety exercises.

The drills were planned by the Sheriff’s School Resource Officers for administrators, faculty and students. SRO Capt. Brad Harrison said the drill consisted of a lockdown practice.

Barfield Principal Judy Goodwin said the teachers and students did well on the scenario.

The original call came for a Code Red lockdown, the principal said. A call for a Code Yellow was delayed but the students and staff followed the protocols and stayed in Code Red until the Code Yellow call was given.

“It was a good test of ‘do you know the protocols?’” Goodwin said. “I am very proud of our students and staff who are very clear on the protocols and prepared for any emergency situation.”

Vice Principal Kevin Templeton and Fire Marshal Josh Sanders of Rutherford County Fire Rescue joined SRO Lt. Brian Wright and Barfield SRO Andrew Towle to review the drill.
