Wishful Thinking: Land owner wants property to be rezoned for commercial growth

Mar 27, 2013 at 05:00 am by Bryan Barrett

A commercial development is being proposed for a site of land on the 231 South, just outside the city limits of Murfreesboro. The land that is before the Rutherford County Regional Planning Commission is along the outskirts of Barfield Crescent Park between Volunteer Road and Hemlock Drive. The exact address is 3892 Shelbyville Highway.

The 8-acres is currently zoned for residential growth, but the proposed change would make it “commercial services.” The planning commission staff is recommending commissioners approve the request on April 8th.

The proposed details state, “the applicant would like to one day build a commercial development on the property, however in the short term the applicant wants to place a temporary fireworks tent on the site during the fourth of July period.” The site sits less than a half mile away from where developers have plans to build a Walmart Super Store. The Walmart is forecasted to be built in 2014 at the intersection of 231 South and County Farm Road. At this point, no construction has begun.
