April Fool’s jokes are definitely not funny for everyone… especially if they lead to possession of child pornography charges. One such incident occured just a few days prior to Aprl 1.
Partner station WMSR reports that a friend playing a practical joke led police to a child porn bust and the arrest of a local sheriff’s office employee.
Michael Spray, 52, was arrested after a large number of obscene photos of underage girls were found on his cell phone. Spray works as a dispatcher for the Bedford County Sheriff’s Department.
According to the Shelbyville Times Gazette, the photos were discovered when one of his friends planned to take a picture of his face and put it on the home screen of Spray’s phone. As that friend started going through Spray’s phone he saw the images of children and alerted his supervisor.
After getting a search warrant, Bedford County officers say they found more images on Spray’s personal laptop. The newspaper, reports that detectives found a “large number” of obscene photos upon investigation.
Spray is now free after posting a $50,000 bond Saturday morning. Officials say he never used department equipment to get the photos.
