RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh promoted School Resource Officer Shane Vaughn to SRO Sgt. Tuesday.
Sgt. Vaughn will manage about nine school resource officers in his new duties along with being an SRO at Stewarts Creek Elementary School.
As an SRO, Vaughn recovered a handgun from a student’s backpack in 2017 at a Rutherford County School. He and SRO Matt Clagg also recovered a handgun from another student at Stewarts Creek High School in 2021.
Vaughn earned the NAACP Jerry Anderson Hero Award two times. He rescued a woman who was trapped in her burning car in 2012 and helped save a LaVergne High School teacher who suffered a medical emergency at school in 2019. He earned the Officer of the Month honors on several occasions.
Vaughn joined the Sheriff’s Office 15 years ago as a patrol deputy. He has served 11 years as an SRO.
