MURFREESBORO, TN - Jaylen Thompson, Riverdale senior, has very high expectations for himself going into his final season.

“I want to be [Tennessee Titans] Mr. Football in Tennessee,” Thompson said when asked about the expectations and goals he has set for himself this season.

The Mr. Football trophy goes to the best player in each of the nine school classifications across the state. In 2016 Savion Davis, Riverdale senior, earned the prestigious award.

“I see Savion’s jersey each day when I walk through the field house and that motivates me,” Thompson said.

“The goal is to get a ring,” Thompson declared. “It is my last year in high school. I want a state ring before I graduate.”

The senior explained he wants to be better and more accomplished than other athletes to graduate from Riverdale High School.

“Caleb [Herring] was great, but I want to be better.”

Herring, a 2022 Riverdale graduate, is currently enrolled at the University of Tennessee and was a four-star recruit and top ranked player in Tennessee last year, according to 247 Sports.

Thompson, a current three-star recruit according to 247 Sports, has committed to play football for Mel Tucker and the Michigan State Spartans.

“It felt like home,” said Thompson. “My whole family visited there with me, and all had the same feelings instantly. It is hard to gain my family’s trust, and [Michigan State] had it right off the bat.”

Will Kriesky, Riverdale Head Football Coach, said Thompson is a leader on his football team.

“During the summer, we had workouts very early in the morning, and each day Jaylen was one of the first through the door,” Krieksy explained. “He is always ready to work and get better.”

Thompson’s smile was undeniable when asked about his excitement for the season.

“I am excited for our first game. That game will set the tone for the rest of the season. I’m ready.”

Riverdale opens their football season playing host to the Smyrna Bulldogs at Tomahawk Stadium tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
