ROCKVALE, TN - When Fred Barlow began his career in education over 40 years ago, he always wondered about the impact he would leave.

Barlow was the first principal to lead Rockvale Middle, which opened in August 2008. He remained there until his retirement in 2022.

On Dec. 12, the school formally dedicated the auditorium in his name.

“I run into so many of my former students who tell me that their experience here and in my classroom was an event,” Barlow said. “I thank everyone who has ever supported me and supported Rockvale Middle School.”

It is the first time the school has dedicated a part of its facility to anyone, said principal Dr. Kelly Newberry, who served as a teacher and assistant principal under Barlow.

“I couldn't think of anyone more fitting of being our first honoree. Mr. Barlow was beloved by his faculty, administration, and students,” she said. “Personally, he is a wonderful mentor, leader, and friend. RMS has had continued success as a result of his leadership, and we will forever be grateful for him.”

Prior to Rockvale Middle’s opening, Barlow was an assistant principal at Smyrna Middle School for three years and the band director for the seven years prior. He started his career as a band director in Hickman County and taught at Oakland High, as well as Page Middle and High schools in Williamson County.

The dedication was held during the winter concert for the seventh- and eighth-grade bands as this year’s eighth graders were the last to have Barlow as principal.

“He’s made a mark on thousands and thousands of students. I’m glad we were able to do this,” Newberry said.
