(SMYRNA, TN) As the Cripple Creek Cloggers enjoy their 57th year, they continue with free clogging classes at the Smyrna Senior Activity Center (100 Raikes St., Smyrna) on January 28, February 4, 18 and 25, 2024. 

The group's founder, Steve Cates, said, "We are preparing for hosting International Folkfest, June 2-9, and traveling during June 15 - 23 to represent the U.S. in an international folkloric festival in Czech Republic. Any interested persons are welcome to attend our sessions. There is no charge and no dance experience is necessary."  

Folkfest Is June

The 42nd International Folkfest is set for June 3-8, 2024. It is centered in Murfreesboro with performances throughout the mid-state. This year Poland, the Czech Republic and England will join the Cripple Creek Cloggers along with the Slim Chance Band for this summer’s event.

In addition to the troupes doing solo presentations to area groups, there will be three major performances in which the entire group from all three countries as well as the Cripple Creek Cloggers and Slim Chance band play:

• Sat. June 4 @ 7PM: South Jackson Performing Arts Centerin Tullahoma
• Thu. June 6 @ 6PM: Bell Buckle Banquet Hall at 27 Railroad Square, Bell Buckle
• Fri. June 7, 5-7PM: Cedar Glade Brewery at 906 Ridgely Rd., Murfreesboro
• Sat. June 8, 6:30-8:30PM:  Simply Smyrna, Smyrna Depot District at 98 Front St., Smyrna

There are also one-troupe public performances at the Smyrna Public Library (10 a.m. on Tues., June 4) and Linebaugh Public Library at 10 a.m. (Wed., June 5)

First of Its Kind

Did you realize that Murfreesboro's International Folkfest was the first of its kind organized in the U.S.  Today all other festivals which were formed after 1982 have closed except one in ID and one in UT. 

Cates expressed appreciation saying, "Only because of the help and support of our community, are we still "'n business'."

Community Support Needed

Cates explained, "Community support has always been key to being able to produce International Folkfest. From the time our visiting troupes arrive in Tennessee, we are responsible for their food, lodging and travel until they depart a week later. We always need and appreciate financial support to help us make this happen. This comes from civic clubs, faith groups, businesses arts organizations, individuals and all types of other organizations which provide grants of money for this type activity.   To meet our budget of approximately $30,000, is always our primary concern. All members of our committee are volunteers and we are always glad for new people to join us."
