Bulletin

In  Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, Phil emerged from his hole to a cheering crowd. The northern morning was cloudy and overcast and the groundhog did not see his shadow. Therefore, spring is about to arrive.

The soothsayers commented, "This year's prediction ended Phil's three consecutive predictions of 6-more weeks of winter".

You'll have to agree, this year's Punxsutawney prediction is a favorite with the throngs. In light of recent conversations, some feel it may have been politically motivated.

The Rest of the Story

You've heard the mixed news coming from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have been running ads showing concern that the groundhog is basically a shy and anti-social rodent known as a marmot.

In addition, the weather service reports that "Phil" has only had a 39 per cent accuracy rate. In today's frenzy of firing losing coaches, it appears ths trend has extended to Punxsutawney Phil.

Punxsutawney Groundhog Club President Tom Dunkel has offered to toss a giant coin. That alone should increase the odds to 50-50! However, Phil has survived another year.

It may also be Rutherford Ralph's day to shine.  For newcomers, Ralph is our local groundhog. By the way, he also did not see his shadow and that translates to "spring is almost here".

As the old saying goes, if it's sunny and the groundhog sees his shadow, he is frightened and runs back into the hole. That means winter will be around for 6-more weeks.  On the other hand, if it's cloudy--the groundhog stays "out". That means that spring is almost here.

No matter how you look at it, spring will arrive in North America on March 19, 2024. Scientifically, the earth is tilted away from the sun only twice yearly. When it's pointed away, that is the vernal equinox--or SPRING. That results in an almost equal number of daylight hours in all latitudes. After that event, the sunlight hours increase each day. Most are ready for that!

Celebrate Ground Hog Day at MTSU this morning!

Well, that gives more reasons to enjoy today's MTSU GROUNDHOG DAY LUNCHEON.  Again, the family style food is served at 11:30AM, Friday (2/2/2024) in the ballroom at MTSU's Student Union Building (1768 MTSU Blvd.).
