(SHELBYVILLE) An old two-story structure on W. Depot Street in downtown Shelbyville quietly became a memory around 1:00 o’clock Friday afternoon (2/23/2024). The building once housed a bank as well as a department store.
We say “quietly”, because workers in the office across the street told officials they did not hear any “rumbles or crashes”.
It is next to the popular Bocelli’s Pizza and Pasta Shoppe and across from both Templeton and Associates Insurance and Capri Theatre, all on W. Depot Street.
A crowd of on-lookers quickly gathered while officials from the police and fire department cordoned off the area to prevent injuries from falling debris.
One person said, “It’s a miracle no one was injured, since the collapse occurred just after lunch time.”
Most of the damage was in the rear of the structure, and demolition crews are working around the clock to raze the old building. Officials indicate the area will be re-opened to business on Monday.
