As St. Patrick's Day approaches, bars are likely preparing for an influx of customers, most of whom will be searching for adult beverages that are filled with a tint of green. Many patrons know and understand the importance of being responsible, but a large number of guests may not have the word responsible in their vocabulary. Drinking too much will equal negative consequences and in worst case scenarios, lost lives. Sadly, St. Patrick's Day is one of the deadliest days for drinking and driving on the roads, as reported by the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO). Year after year, the rate of impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes spikes, especially at night during St. Patrick's Day.

In response to this concerning trend, Rutherford County Sheriff's Sgt. Austin Watson is spearheading an initiative called "Operation Spring Slow Down." This event, coordinated by officers from the Rutherford County Traffic Safety Task Force, aims to curb traffic fatalities, particularly on Interstate 24, during the evening hours from 6 p.m. to midnight on St. Patrick's Day. "The goal here is to cut down on impaired drivers during St. Patrick's Day," emphasized Sgt. Watson, underscoring the importance of proactive measures to ensure road safety during the holiday festivities.

Joining forces with the THSO, Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers, as well as local law enforcement agencies including Murfreesboro, Smyrna, and MTSU Police, along with sheriff's deputies, ALL of which are urging individuals who plan to consume alcohol to refrain from driving. Instead, they advocate for alternative transportation methods such as securing a designated driver, utilizing ride-sharing services, or choosing to celebrate responsibly at home.

With the theme "Don't Press Your Luck," this initiative emphasizes the critical importance of making responsible decisions to prevent tragedies on the road. By raising awareness and promoting safe alternatives to drinking and driving, law enforcement agencies hope to make St. Patrick's Day celebrations safer for everyone in Rutherford County and beyond.
