Matheny had a distinguished career in public service. He served as a state representative for Warren and Coffee counties and was a respected figure in local politics. Tributes from Rutherford Countians

Mayor Joe Carr

Rutherford County Mayor Joe Carr was saddened to hear of the loss. He said, "Judd was and is a good friend and former House colleague."

48th District State Representative Bryan Terry

48th District State Representative Bryan Terry commented, "I am deeply saddened by the passing of Judd Matheny.  I considered him a loyal friend and legislative ally.  Judd gave me encouragement when I first decided to run for office.  We became friends throughout our shared time in the General Assembly.  He helped me learn how to be an effective legislator and was always in my corner.  Tennessee is a better place with Judd having served."

49th District State Representative Mike Sparks

Judd was not only a great man of character, but he was an independent thinker and was his own man. He cared about people and working folks, public safety and education. Judd helped lead the effort to oust then Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman to resign. Judd, myself and 13 other Republican representatives caused a huge stir. Roughly, sixty-five school superintendents across our state voted no confidence in Huffman. Judd listened and had the courage to make tough decisions. He will be greatly missed. Prayers for his family during such a difficult time.

County Mayor Matheny’s passing leaves a void in the heart of the Coffee County community. He will be remembered for his dedication to public service and his commitment to the betterment of the region he served. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who were touched by his work.
