Washington, DC -Tax Day is this coming Monday, April 15, 2024, are you ready? Tennesseans have an opportunity to simplify their filing process with a new PILOT PROGRAM.

The Volunteer State is one of 12 states participating in the free IRS pilot program called DIRECT FILE. Approximately a million Tennesseans are eligible for this new program. In fact, the IRS reports that those who have used DIRECT FILE have completed their entire filing in less than 30-minutes.

Did you realize that eight out of ten Tennessee tax payers are due a refund?

They do warn those who take advantage of this new DIRECT FILE pilot program, not to get in a hurry and to carefully check for typos giving incorrect social security numbers and other errors. That will dramatically slow the process down.

Discover whether this new Pilot Program is for you, Visit their website at IRS.gov to answer some questions and see if you are eligible. Remember, eligibility is not based on the amount of money that you earn.

One other items that could help you before filing taxes this coming Monday is that some adjacent and nearby counties were declared disaster areas due to storms and tornados. If you reside or have a business in Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Gibson, Montgomery, Robertson, Stewart and Sumner and Weakley counties, you will have until June 17, 2024, to file returns and pay any taxes that were originally due during this period.

The June 17, 2024, deadline applies to individual income tax returns and payments normally due on April 15, 2024. For affected taxpayers, 2023 contributions to IRAs and health savings accounts are extended to June 17, 2024.

The IRS automatically identifies taxpayers located in the covered disaster area and applies filing and payment relief. But affected taxpayers who reside or have a business located outside the covered disaster area should call the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227 to request this tax relief.
