School Safety Upgrades in Rutherford County and Examining the Idea of Being Armed in the Classroom

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - Changes are being seen across the state as new schools are built after a new law went into effect that calls for increased safety measures. In the Rutherford County School district, one of the changes being felt focuses on bullet resistant windows... That was County School Director Jimmy Sullivan.

With a focus on school safety, a new legislative bill was signed by the governor late last month that allows for teachers to carry a concealed handgun on school grounds. But in Rutherford County, educators won't be armed anytime soon... According to the bill, local teachers can only be armed if the schools director and the Sheriff of Rutherford County have a signed agreement.
James Evans, the Communications Director, further suggested that due to Rutherford County having one of the most extensive School Resource Officer programs in the state, teachers will not have permission to carry firearms in the classroom...
