A graduate student at MTSU who was involved in a life changing hit and run accident in 2006 has hopes to soon be able to drive again. Jennifer Austin, whose life changed in a mere second on I-24, told WGNS she hopes to receive enough votes to win a new handicap accessible van.
Jennifer Austin is one of those college students you hear about who somehow manages to graduate despite major obstacles standing in her way. Austin is paralyzed from the mid chest down, she is a quadriplegic.
Her wreck occurred in 2006 and the years following she underwent nine surgeries and spent a total of four months in the hospital. In 2009 she took a massive step forward to claim her independence and moved out of her parents’ home to start back at MTSU. Austin received her Bachelor’s degree in August of 2012 and will soon earn her Master’s degree.
Austin told WGNS that her next step towards individual freedom will be to once again get behind the wheel of a vehicle and drive. If she wins enough votes, she will receive a free van.
