Candace Orrand Bush and Gary Bush, the couple accused of murdering Lynn Orrand in the area of Halls Hill Pike and Richland Road in 1982, were in Murfreesboro this week seeking relief from their prison sentence. The two are currently incarcerated in a state prison.
Candace Bush was married to Orrand in the 1980’s when she and Gary Bush allegedly conspired to kill Orrand. Lynn Orrand was shot in the back while hunting in Rutherford County and Gary Bush maintained it was an accident. After Orrand’s death Candace married Gary Bush, the man accused of shooting Orrand. In 2007 Orrand’s body was exhumed and the cold case re-opened. In court a doctor testified, “The victim’s wounds were consistent with having been “shot once with a slug . . . in the back and having been struck by fragments from a second shot that struck a nearby rock.” Candace and Gary Bush were later convicted of first degree murder and have since appealed the case, but their efforts have led them nowhere.
Earlier this week in a Rutherford County Courtroom, the couple filed for post-conviction relief. In such a case a judge can either deny the petition, order a new trial or modify the sentence. It is too early at this point to tell what the outcome of their request will be. In the meantime, Candace and Gary Bush remain in prison and will be eligible for parole in year 2044 (Gary will be 99-years of age and Candace will be 91-years of age).
Lisa Marchesoni with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office told WGNS on Tuesday, the two have already been released back to the custody of the Department of Corrections.
