Habitat "WALL BUILD" at Nissan Next Week

Aug 16, 2024 at 12:41 pm by WGNS

Smyrna, TN – Next Friday (8/23) from 8:00AM to 3:00PM over 100 volunteers from Nissan and the community will build the walls for Rutherford County’s Habitat for Humanity’s 200th home. This event will miraculously take place in only 5-hours at Nissan’s Vehicle Assembly Plant in Smyrna.

As the walls are built, they will be erected to create a temporary house in the Nissan parking lot. The public is invited to attend this exciting event!

Then the walls will be transported to Habitat’s Legacy Pointe subdivision in Murfreesboro for the full house build for future homeowner Chanelle, a single mother of three. She works in administration for a mental health provider.

Chanelle and members of her family will work hand-in-hand with Nissan volunteers on the panel build, who will be able to tour the house with her and see where her family will live. They will also sign the walls with words of encouragement and well-wishes for Chanelle and her family.

Completion of the 200th Habitat' home is forecast to be in late November.

Habitat will have a special event for that dedication and ribbon cutting during the holidays. Plus, the local Habitat is also celebrating its 35th anniversary. It was founded in Rutherford County in August of 1989 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Since then, the affiliate has built 200 houses in Rutherford County, including in LaVergne, Smyrna and Murfreesboro.

In 2019 Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity began development of an 18-acre affordable housing community called Legacy Pointe. Since then Habitat has built 34 homes in the unique subdivision. When completed, it will The development will include 76 homes.

Like many Habitat’ future homeowners, Chanelle has had trouble finding affordable housing over the years and has often worked two or three jobs to make ends meet. The cost of rental housing in Rutherford County has skyrocketed, so many residents have been paying 50 per cent or more of their monthly income on housing alone, leaving little money for other family needs.

Members of the Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity team will be on the WGNS Action Line to share more about the WALL BUILD that will take place throughout that day. The broadcast is 8:10-9:00AM this coming Thursday, Aug. 22, 2023.
