RUTHERFORD COUNTY - The winter storm brought Rutherford County snow and a surprise wintry mix during the afternoon hours Friday, creating dangerous roads, closing schools and businesses. Three inches was a common snow measurement, especially in areas that didn't see the mixed precipitation.
Now, Rutherford County is expected to face a new hazard - icy roads that refreeze after sunset throughout the weekend. With overnight temperatures predicted to drop into the teens or 20s through Sunday, black ice remains a significant concern, increasing the likelihood of accidents. On Friday, road crews focused on clearing primary routes and critical areas, including hospitals and emergency facilities. However, many secondary roads and neighborhoods continued to pose challenges, and some routes were temporarily closed due to unsafe conditions.
Although progress has been made, residual moisture on treated roads could refreeze as temperatures plummet, heightening the risk of black ice. Authorities have reiterated the importance of caution and are encouraging residents to limit travel to essential trips while crews work to improve road safety.
