Travel Advisory: Pothole Repairs on I-24 and I-840 in Rutherford County

Feb 20, 2025 at 06:05 pm by WGNS

Rutherford County, TN - As you travel along I-24 and I-840 in Rutherford County, please be aware that arctic temperatures, snow, and ice have significantly impacted the roadways. Potholes are forming quickly due to the freeze-thaw cycle, where water seeps into cracks, freezes, expands, and then melts, causing the pavement to break apart.

TDOT and the Rutherford County Highway Department are actively working to fill these potholes with a temporary mix. However, a permanent fix can only be made once warmer weather arrives, as the materials used for permanent repairs require temperatures above freezing to properly bond with the existing pavement.

Is road repair in winter dangerous? Yes, it can be. The cold temperatures and icy conditions pose risks to both workers and drivers. Additionally, ice melting compounds can contribute to the deterioration of road surfaces over time, although they are necessary for immediate safety during winter. And when you see "blue lights", for the safety of emergency crews--pull over and leave a CLEAR LANE between you and the "blue lights".

Are today's roads safer to travel on? Modern road construction techniques and materials have improved safety, but challenges like potholes and winter weather still pose risks.

Stay safe on the roads and drive cautiously!
