MURFREESBORO - Power has been restored in downtown Murfreesboro after a two-vehicle crash led to a widespread outage Tuesday evening.
Authorities are investigating the collision, which occurred around 6:00 PM near South East Broad Street and Maney Avenue. One of the vehicles struck a utility pole, bringing down power lines and cutting electricity to more than 800 customers in the downtown area. The outage stretched from the Square toward Middle Tennessee Boulevard, affecting businesses, homes, and WGNS Radio.
Middle Tennessee Electric crews worked quickly to repair the damage, restoring power to most areas in just over an hour. Initially, officials had warned that some locations, including the Square, could experience prolonged outages, but expedited repairs helped minimize the impact. Power was restored around 7:00 PM.
The crash forced the closure of SE Broad Street between Maney Avenue and Academy Street, while disruptions were also reported at the CSX railroad crossing near Middle Tennessee Boulevard and Church Street. Emergency Medical Services transported one individual to Ascension St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital for treatment.
Debris from the accident, including a downed utility pole, transformers, and high-voltage power lines, landed near McCurry Van and Car Rental at 406 SE Broad Street. Emergency crews from Murfreesboro Fire-Rescue and Murfreesboro Police responded swiftly to the scene to manage the situation and assist with the investigation.
With power restored and roadways reopen, downtown Murfreesboro is returning to normal operations. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
