Spring Fling, Day 1, Recap

May 21, 2013 at 11:19 pm by bryan

A slow start doomed Riverdale baseball in their Spring Fling debut. As heard on WGNS State Farm sports, down 8-1, a three run seventh inning wasn't enough as they fell to Collierville 8-4. The Warriors are faced with elimination this (Wednesday) morning at Siegel as they face Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett at 10am.

Smyrna softball, fresh off a dominating sectional win over Soddy Daisy, had their hands full with Maryville. Locked in a zero-zero stalemate and in the 10th inning, Kelsey Russell hit a two-run blast that pushed the Lady Bulldogs to the second round. They'll play this afternoon at approximately 12pm at McKnight Park.

Central Magnet, in only their second year, clawed their way to the Spring Fling's second round. The Tigers, in a see-saw affair with Dyersburg, pulled out the victory late and got past the Trojans 5-4. They'll play this afternoon at approximately 12:30 at Smyrna versus Pigeon Forge.

In soccer, both La Vergne and Smyrna lost their games, which ended their seasons in the Spring Fling.

WGNS plans a busy day of State Farm coverage of the Blue Cross Spring Fling today, if Mother Nature cooperates. First, we'll bring you Riverdale versus Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett at 9:45 airtime. Then, Jon Dinkins and Bryan Barrett will travel to Smyrna for the Central Magnet Tiger's battle with Pigeon Forge. That game will be at approximately 12:30pm or so. After that, this afternoon, they'll have Riverdale softball. Their game time will depend on the Lady Warrior's 10am game with Dickson County. It's their first game of the tournament. It's also possible we could broadcast another baseball game this evening, so there is a busy day ahead for the WGNS Primetime Sport team.
