Three Juveniles Charged in Connection to Smyrna Middle School Fire

SMYRNA, Tenn. (WGNS) - The Rutherford County Fire Marshal’s Office has charged three juveniles with multiple felonies following a classroom fire at Smyrna Middle School on April 17.

Following a thorough multi-day investigation, the juveniles were officially charged with aggravated arson, false reports, and 20 counts of reckless endangerment. Authorities say the fire originated in a classroom and prompted a full evacuation of the school. No injuries were reported.

The investigation was led by the Rutherford County Fire Marshal’s Office in collaboration with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers, the Smyrna Fire Department, and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

Due to their age, the names of the juveniles have not been released. They have been taken to the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center.

The fire caused temporary disruption to the school day, but operations have since returned to normal. School officials expressed gratitude for the quick response by emergency personnel and praised staff and students for following safety protocols during the evacuation.

The Rutherford County Fire Marshal’s Office emphasized that incidents like this are taken seriously and will be investigated thoroughly to protect the safety and well-being of all students and staff.
