What a Year for Local Sports

A remarkable prep sports year has drawn to a close. Last year's record number of games, coach’s shows and talk shows was shattered this year, with 178 events broadcast. 125 of those were game. Those included the Siegel Stars making it to the final four in football, losing a battle to Maryville at home with quarterback Brent Stockstill playing with a torn ACL. In basketball, three local girls’ teams were ranked 1, 2, and 3 in the state for a while. Riverdale won their second state championship in a row and were also national champs in two polls. The Blackman boys were ranked number one in the state for most of the year and along with Siegel, made it to the state tournament. The Spring Fling had more local teams than ever before. Riverdale and Central Magnet baseball along with Riverdale and Smyrna softball were in the state tournament. Riverdale baseball made the state’s final four for the second straight year, Riverdale softball and Central Magnet baseball were in the final six and Smyrna won the school’s first-ever state softball championship.

In a day when local radio stations are flipping on the automation switch an playing syndicated programming, this type of coverage is almost unheard of around the country, much less the state. So, if you enjoy hearing local sports games on WGNS, please say thank to the sponsors you hear during the broadcast. Without them, we wouldn't be able to bring you the excitement Rutherford County sports has to offer.
