REAL ID Deadline Has Arrived—Expect Long Lines

May 06, 2025 at 08:05 pm by WGNSRadio

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WGNS) - The day we've been telling you about for months is finally here: May 7 marks the beginning of new federal REAL ID requirements. Tennessee driver licenses and ID cards that are not REAL ID-compliant will no longer be accepted to enter federal buildings, military bases, nuclear power plants, or board commercial flights within the U.S.

With the deadline officially in effect, extremely long lines are expected at Driver Services Centers across the state as residents rush to renew their licenses and upgrade to a REAL ID. If you still need one, you can apply before or after the deadline—but if you have upcoming travel plans, it’s best to get it done early, as processing and delivery can take up to 20 business days.

Do You Need a REAL ID?

Getting a REAL ID is optional, and regular Tennessee licenses will still be valid for driving, voting, purchasing alcohol or tobacco, applying for federal benefits, and accessing hospitals, banks, post offices, and federal courts.

However, if you choose not to get a REAL ID, you’ll need an alternate federally approved photo ID—such as a valid passport—to fly domestically. For a full list of acceptable IDs, visit the .

How to Apply for a REAL ID

To apply, you must visit a Driver Services Center or participating County Clerk office in person. Be prepared with the following original or certified documents:

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal presence

  • Proof of your Social Security Number

  • Two proofs of Tennessee residency

  • Certified name change documents (if applicable, such as marriage licenses or divorce decrees)

For faster service, residents can pre-approve their documents online to streamline the process and avoid repeat trips. Visit tnrealid.gov for details.

What to Expect at Driver Services Centers

With the new requirements officially in place, expect high wait times at renewal locations across Rutherford County and Tennessee. Long lines have been forming in the weeks leading up to the deadline, and today’s rush is expected to be even bigger.

If you need to upgrade to a REAL ID but don’t have immediate travel plans, waiting until the rush dies down may be the best option. But if you need one soon, arriving early and having all documents ready will help speed up the process.
