MTE Launches Smart Thermostat Program to Cut Costs and Prevent Blackouts

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - Hot summer days are just around the corner, and Middle Tennessee Electric is teaming up with the Tennessee Valley Authority to roll out a new program that could help you save on your electric bill. The Smart Thermostat Rewards program is designed to conserve electricity and reduce the risk of rolling blackouts during extreme heat…

You may remember that, in the past, electric providers across the state were forced to implement short-term power shutoffs to prevent a total grid failure — something no one wants to experience again. The Smart Thermostat Rewards program is one step toward preventing a repeat of a rolling blackout… In Rutherford County, MTE has only conducted one blackout in nearly 90-years of service.

McKee told WGNS News… Here’s how it works: Participants can save money by reducing electricity usage during peak demand times. In return, they’ll receive a $65 enrollment rebate. Customers who stay enrolled year-round will get an additional $65 annual rebate, while those who enroll for the summer months only will receive a $20 annual anniversary rebate. On top of that, anyone who buys a qualifying smart thermostat can also receive a $100 rebate to help offset the cost of the new device.
