Tennessee Drops from Bronze to Honorable Mention in the Cheapest Gas Olympics

May 12, 2025 at 11:35 am by WGNS News

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - Congratulations, Tennessee drivers—you’re now paying a whole penny more per gallon of gas than you were last week. That’s right, our great state has slipped from being the third cheapest place in America to fuel up to a respectable fourth. Break out the tissues and the gas cans.

As of May 12, gas prices across Tennessee are averaging a whopping $2.72 per gallon for regular unleaded, which apparently is enough to knock us off the medals podium. Mississippi, the reigning champion of frugal fueling, is sitting smugly at the top with $2.63 per gallon. Must be nice.

Here in Rutherford County, you’ll be paying a modest $2.70 per gallon—just enough to make you feel like you’re getting a deal, without actually saving money. North in Wilson County, it’s the same story: $2.70 and a dream. Head south to Shelbyville, and you’ll shave a generous 3 cents off your total at $2.67 per gallon. That’s almost enough for… nothing, really.

But don’t get too excited. In Woodbury, just a short drive east, prices hit a steep $2.87. Apparently, scenic views come with a surcharge. And then there’s Williamson County, proudly charging a premium $3.18 per gallon for the same low-grade gasoline. Luxury fumes must cost more.

For diesel drivers, it’s a slightly different saga. The average price for diesel in Tennessee is now $3.24 per gallon. That makes us the 12th cheapest in the nation—because mediocrity needs love too. Texas, of course, continues to win at everything, including diesel prices, which hover around $3.06 per gallon. Must be something in the brisket.

So yes, prices are creeping up ever so slowly. But hey, at least we’re not California, where regular unleaded is the highest in the country at $4.89 per gallon for regular unleaded, and $5.27 per gallon for premium fuel. There, diesel costs an average of $5.00 per gallon, as of Monday.
