The International Folkloric Society Planning Council, Inc. (IFS), a non-profit organization founded in 1986, has been dedicated to preserving and promoting international cultural heritage. Founder Steve Cates shared, “Our mission is to celebrate diversity through the arts, fostering connection and appreciation across cultures.”

Not only does Folkfest welcome visiting performers, but it also gives Murfreesboro’s own Cripple Creek Cloggers the opportunity to represent Tennessee’s rich traditions as cultural ambassadors worldwide.

A Week of Music, Dance, and Discovery

From public library performances to lively evening festivals, the Folkfest features a packed schedule of events that are free or low-cost for attendees!

Educational & Community Performances: Visiting troupes will showcase their talents at local libraries, schools, and civic clubs, ensuring that audiences of all ages can experience authentic dance and music from around the world.

Evening Showcases: Larger public performances, accompanied by the Slim Chance Band, will take place at venues across Middle Tennessee, offering a chance to enjoy the rhythms and artistry of Estonia, Poland, and Puerto Rico.

Cultural Exchange & Exploration: While in Murfreesboro, visiting groups will explore historical and scenic sites, and dignitaries—including diplomats and government officials—will participate in traditional gift exchanges to honor the spirit of unity and cultural appreciation.
