Walter Hill, TN - Rutherford County has officially completed its new 13,000-square-foot waste transfer station, inviting the public to a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at 11:00 AM. The facility, located at 6000 Landfill Rd., behind Middle Point Landfill, will serve as a critical hub for managing solid waste in the county.
County Mayor Joe Carr highlighted the significance of the event, noting that it coincides with National Garbage Man Day. “This is an opportunity for residents to see firsthand how this state-of-the-art facility operates,” Carr stated.
A transfer station functions as a temporary holding site for solid waste before it is transported to its final destination. Trucks deliver waste to the facility’s tipping floor, where it is then loaded into 53-foot-long semi-trailers for long-haul transport. Currently, all waste collected at county convenience centers is processed at Middle Point Landfill free of charge under a host agreement. However, with Middle Point’s anticipated closure, Rutherford County has secured a 15-year contract with Cedar Ridge, a Waste Management facility in Lewisburg, TN, for future waste disposal.
The Rutherford County Transfer Station (RCTS) will accept waste generated within the county, with disposal fees applied based on the monthly tonnage fee schedule. Private and public entities producing large volumes of residential, commercial, or construction waste are welcome to utilize the facility, provided they pay the associated tipping fees.
Residential waste disposal remains free of charge at Rutherford County’s 14 Convenience Centers. Residents must provide proof of residency to access this service.
Addressing public concerns about odor from Middle Point Landfill, officials stated that while complete odor elimination is not guaranteed, the enclosed design of the transfer station will help contain odors within the building.
The new facility is designed to be financially self-sustaining without reliance on property tax dollars. Officials emphasize that the transfer station will support the county’s growth while providing economic opportunities for small commercial haulers.
Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to attend the ribbon-cutting event to learn more about the transfer station’s operations and impact on waste management in Rutherford County.
