Murfreesboro, TN - In the heart of Murfreesboro, leadership is more than a title—it’s a legacy, a ripple effect that touches lives in profound ways. On Saturday evening (5/31/2025), that legacy was celebrated as friends, colleagues, and community members gathered at The View at the Fountains to honor the retirement of Gordon B. Ferguson, marking the conclusion of his remarkable 27-year tenure as president and CEO of Ascension St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital.
The celebration was filled with heartfelt exchanges, laughter, and shared memories. One guest noted the diversity of the crowd and reflected, “These are people who really care, and I love all of them.” That sentiment was echoed throughout the evening, as stories of Gordon’s impact and kindness flowed.
A Life of Leadership and Service
Ferguson’s journey has been one of dedication and faith. Having moved to America from Scotland, where his father served as a Presbyterian minister in Knoxville, Gordon built a career defined by compassionate leadership. “It was my accent that first attracted Cindy,” he joked, referring to his wife—a charming detail that gave the audience a warm glimpse into his personal life.
His influence extended far beyond the hospital walls. Tennessee Ascension St. Thomas Ministry Market President and CEO Fahad Tahir shared a touching memory of how Gordon and Cindy were the first to welcome him and his family to Murfreesboro, offering unwavering support throughout the years.
A Legacy Cemented in Murfreesboro’s History
As a testament to Gordon’s enduring impact, Ascension St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital Board Chair Patty Marschel announced that the road encircling the hospital campus would be renamed Gordon Ferguson Circle—symbolizing continuity, leadership, and an unending cycle of service.
Though retiring, Ferguson’s work is far from over. A new goal was set for him to raise $1.5 million for a vital project at the hospital, and the night’s activities ensured that his efforts were off to a strong start. Christy-Houston Foundation President Anne Davis and Board Member Bill Jones surprised the crowd with a $1 million grant in Gordon’s honor, underscoring the profound respect and gratitude his service has garnered.
Looking Forward
The hospital stands on the brink of a milestone, just two years away from its centennial anniversary. Marschel revealed that Gordon has been working on a new book detailing the hospital’s history, staff, and services, set to be released on May 2, 2027, in celebration of 100 years of healthcare excellence. It's title, "A Time to Excel"!
Gordon was also honored with a series of gifts, including an intricately designed pen and ink rendering that depicts his healthcare journey, and a well-deserved getaway to Blackberry Farm, a world-renowned retreat nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains.
A Fitting Tribute to a True Leader
The evening reached its emotional crescendo as Cor Christi Ministry’s retired leader, Timm Glover, invited the room to raise a toast to Gordon and Cindy. A hush fell over the gathering as a bagpiper solemnly marched in, playing “Scotland the Brave”, before concluding with a rousing rendition of “Rocky Top”, bringing both joy and nostalgia to those present.
A lifetime of leadership, compassion, and unwavering service was lovingly celebrated Saturday night—thank you, Gordon B. Ferguson, for a job well done. Your impact will continue to shape Murfreesboro and Ascension St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital for generations to come.
