MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - About 30 rising sixth-grade students from northern Rutherford County Schools are kicking off summer with hands-on learning and active fun at the annual Junior Deputy Academy hosted by the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.
Held at Brown's Chapel Elementary School, the three-day academy is designed for rising sixth-grade students, giving them a chance to learn about the role of School Resource Officers (SROs), first aid basics from Rutherford County Schools nurses, and self-protection techniques. The program is aimed at helping students build confidence and a stronger sense of integrity as they transition to middle school.
Throughout the academy, SROs work closely with students to teach key values like team building and responsibility. Alongside classroom lessons, the program includes plenty of physical activity, such as dodgeball games and basketball, with SROs joining in to encourage bonding and trust between students and law enforcement.
The Junior Deputy Academy not only provides valuable knowledge but also creates a positive and memorable experience for students as they prepare for the next step in their education.
Video from the academy highlights the day's learning and fun, giving a closer look at how the program connects students and officers through teamwork and community engagement.
