MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) — In observance of Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States, City Hall and most Murfreesboro government offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19, 2025. Juneteenth commemorates the day (June 19, 1865) Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and issued General Order No. 3, proclaiming the end of slavery in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation. Though the Civil War had ended two months earlier, the news had not yet reached Texas, making Juneteenth a symbol of delayed freedom.
