The daylighting of Town Creek will create something that will make the area between the Murfree Spring Wetlands and Cannonsburgh more enjoyable for all ages. Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland noted...

Ryan Maloney, with Griggs and Maloney Engineering, says while the last few months have focused on foundational work, some of the more visible and exciting park features are coming soon.

He says current work has centered on preparing the creek channel and moving essential utilities...

“Mass excavation for the creek channel and several utility efforts which are a relocation of water line along Front Street and also underground electric setting stage for electric poles along Broad TV removed post project.”

Once buried underground in the mid-20th century, Town Creek is being restored to a more natural, open state. That process hasn’t been without its challenges. Maloney says crews have discovered evidence of Murfreesboro’s past—some of it unexpected...

“Abandoned sewer system from 1950s that predated the Broad St. redevelopment. We had some old fuel tanks from a service station operated there and so we expect to find more of those things as we go along with the project, most of which we hope we know about and we'll have a few surprises I expect.”

The urban stream restoration project is on track for completion by December 31, 2026. Once finished, the new linear park will include trails, plazas, pedestrian bridges, and a recreational area—connecting Murfree Spring to Cannonsburgh Village and transforming the Bottoms area into a scenic downtown destination.
