Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland

Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland focuses on the "Heart of Tennessee". The following topics were covered in the mayor's broadcast--in this order:

  • Daylighting of Town Creek is underway (creek in a culvert under the ground). They are opening the culvert and creating a park with a "walking greenway" following the banks of the creek.
  • Bottoms UPDATE: There was a heavily attended community meeting several years ago about developing the "Bottoms" (an area that had poverty dwellings and was low-ground that flooded regularly. In the 1950's, the creek that flooded was put underground in culverts and Cannonsburgh was created.
  • 3. Keystone Project UPDATE: The changing of parts of the property, mainly moving the proposed hotel out until when loan institutions are again willing to fund hospitality facilities. Plans are that as a part of the agreement, the developer will TIF funds (Tax Incremental Financing) for the project. Mayor McFarland expects construction to begin inthe 3rd quarter of 2025 (July, Aug, September).
  • City of Murfreesboro's budget for Fiscal Year 2025-26 goes into effect July 1, 2025. Mayor went over budget information.
  • City of Murfreesboro owns the land that borders NW Broad St. between Front Street and Lytle Creek.
  • TDOT is marking Thompson Lane, between Broad and Memorial. The $150-million construction project to widen the traffic clogged roadway will begin this year (2025).
  • MIDDLE POINT LANDFILL: Tues. (6/10/2025), TDEC (Tennessee Department of Environmental Conservation) notified Mayor McFarland that they sent an inspector to Middle Point Landfill at end of May, 2025, to determine if the solid waste there was being adequately and properly covered. It was determined that, as an industry standard, something called "breach dirt" is used to cover the garbage placed in the landfill. "Breach dirt" is typically used only one or two days, until it become "non usable", because too much waste was mixed into it. The TDEC inspector told Middle Point Landfill they needed to replace the "breach dirt" at the proper time, and they said that Republic was not adequtely covering the surface landfill space that was being used. The mayor indicated that TDEC informed him that an unannounced second inspection was made at Middle Point Landfill on June 6, 2025, and that only half of the area the state told Republic to cover was done. TEDEC issued a V-1 violation against Republic Services relating to the firm's "daily cover violation".
