INGLEWOOD, Calif. (WGNS) - Brian Wilson, the creative force behind The Beach Boys and one of the most influential figures in American pop music, has died at the age of 82.

As the mastermind behind some of the most iconic songs of the 20th century, Wilson helped define the California sound with hits like “California Girls,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Surfer Girl,” and “Good Vibrations.” His groundbreaking work on Pet Sounds pushed the boundaries of studio production and redefined what pop music could be.

Access Tennessee's Will Nunley has reaction from the Music City, Nashville, on the passing of Wilson:

Born in Inglewood, California, in 1942, Wilson co-founded The Beach Boys with his brothers Carl and Dennis, cousin Mike Love, and childhood friend Al Jardine. By the early 1960s, the group rose to fame with their signature harmonies and songs celebrating surf culture, youth, and summer freedom.

Wilson served not only as a performer but also as the group’s principal songwriter, arranger, and producer. His innovative studio techniques and layered compositions influenced generations of musicians and producers around the world. Albums like Pet Sounds and singles like “God Only Knows” became benchmarks for musical excellence.

Despite his professional success, Wilson faced serious personal and mental health challenges throughout his life, including struggles with schizoaffective disorder and later dementia. In his final years, he was placed under a conservatorship following the death of his wife, Melinda.

Wilson’s legacy stretches far beyond chart-topping hits. His fearless creativity, emotional honesty, and meticulous production elevated pop music to new artistic heights. With his passing, music loses a true visionary—but his timeless songs will continue to inspire for generations to come.
