Murfreesboro, TN - If you’re looking for engaging and educational weekend plans, Middle Tennessee State University has two lively events coming up on back-to-back Saturdays, open to residents in Rutherford County and beyond. Both events, hosted with help from MTSU faculty and staff, offer opportunities to learn, explore, and enjoy the outdoors—without spending a dime.
Garden Extravaganza – June 14, 2025: Lane Agri-Park, 315 John R. Rice Blvd., Murfreesboro 9 a.m. to Noon
Green thumbs (and those aspiring to be) will love the Rutherford County Garden Extravaganza, a free event offering expert insights on landscaping, biodiversity, and native plants. One highlight is the “Limestone Cedar Glades: Rock Gardens in Nature” talk by MTSU biology professor Kim Cleary Sadler, who will share insights on unique Middle Tennessee plant life at 10:30 a.m.
Other speakers include Justin Stefanski, discussing sustainable landscaping at 11 a.m., and Andra Prewett, introducing attendees to Murfreesboro’s native plants at 11:30 a.m.
Garden tours take place from 9 to 11 a.m., offering inspiration for your own backyard oasis. The event, co-hosted by MTSU Stormwater, Rutherford County Extension, and Master Gardeners, aims to educate residents on environmentally friendly gardening while showcasing the gardens onsite.
Boat Day – June 21, 2025: Jefferson Springs Recreation Area, 7660 W. Jefferson Pike, Smyrna 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Water lovers, this one’s for you! Boat Day 2025 offers a chance to kayak, canoe, paint pots, and participate in hands-on stormwater education activities—all for free. Hosted by MTSU Stormwater, along with organizations like Outdoor Murfreesboro and Smyrna Parks and Recreation, the event aims to educate attendees on water quality and paddling safety while providing a fun day on the water.
Canoes, kayaks, and equipment will be provided at no cost, and walk-ups are welcome. However, participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
With multiple agencies offering interactive exhibits, this event is a perfect summer outing for families, nature enthusiasts, and anyone looking to explore Rutherford County’s waterways.
