Father’s Day is This Sunday: A Tradition of Honor and Gratitude

Jun 13, 2025 at 03:58 am by WGNS

Rutherford County, TN - This Sunday, June 15, 2025, families across the country will take a moment to celebrate Father’s Day—a tradition spanning over a century, honoring fathers and father figures for their unwavering guidance, sacrifices, and support. Few people know that this heartfelt holiday started with one family's story. Sonora Smart Dodd, inspired by the devotion of her father, William Jackson Smart—a Civil War veteran who single-handedly raised six children—sought to create a special day to honor fathers like him. A year later, in 1910, the local YMCA in Spokane, Washington, hosted the first public celebration. Now, 115 years later, Father’s Day is observed in more than 70 countries worldwide.

Changes

The holiday has also evolved to reflect today’s changing family dynamics. It now recognizes not only biological fathers but also stepdads, mentors, and father figures who play pivotal roles in shaping lives. With shifting societal norms, modern fathers are taking on more active and nurturing roles in parenting, contributing significantly to child development and well-being.

Impact of Dads

Research consistently highlights the profound impact fathers and father figures have on a child’s emotional, social, and cognitive development. Studies show that engaged fathers contribute to stronger academic achievement, better social skills, and improved long-term mental health. Active involvement, particularly in early childhood, fosters problem-solving abilities, curiosity, and resilience.

Additionally, children with strong father figures in their lives are more likely to pursue higher education and less likely to encounter legal troubles, demonstrating the far-reaching effects of paternal influence.

From Your Heart

As Father’s Day approaches this Sunday, take a moment to reflect on the important men in your life—whether a father, stepfather, grandfather, or mentor. Their guidance, encouragement, and example shape futures in ways we often don’t recognize until years later. This Sunday, make sure to express your gratitude and appreciation. A simple message, a heartfelt conversation, or a thoughtful gesture can go a long way in celebrating the remarkable contributions of these role models.
