SMYRNA, Tenn. (WGNS) — In a continued celebration of cultural exchange and international friendship, the Town of Smyrna's Sister City Student Program will send 15 local students and six chaperones to Zama, Japan this summer from July 19 through August 2.
This marks the latest chapter in a 35-year partnership between Smyrna and Zama, Japan, established through a Sister City agreement initiated in 1991. The exchange is part of a three-year cycle where students alternate visits between the two cities. Last year, students from Zama visited Smyrna; this year, the exchange continues with local students immersing themselves in Japanese life and culture.
During their two-week stay, Smyrna participants will live with host families—many of whom they met during last summer’s visit—and engage in a packed itinerary. Highlights include visiting Tokyo and its iconic Skytree, touring the Nissan car museum and CAMP Zama U.S. Army base, and meeting with local government officials. The students will also attend classes with their Japanese counterparts and visit the historical city of Kamakura and nearby beaches.
The program, originally rooted in adult leadership exchanges, quickly evolved into a student-focused initiative to better serve Smyrna’s youth. Coordinated by the Smyrna Sister City Committee, the program aims to foster cross-cultural understanding and enhance Smyrna’s international profile through education, the arts, and community relationships.
