Future Military Leaders Train at MTSU as Sea Cadet Program Returns to Campus

Murfreesboro, TN - From June 6 to 19, 2025, Middle Tennessee State University looked more like a bustling military training camp than a college campus, as nearly 90 youths in crisp uniforms tackled leadership drills, scuba diving, and even simulated ship emergencies. They hosted members of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, a national youth development program aimed at preparing 10 to 18-year-olds for possible futures in the military or public service. The visiting cadets, representing 46 units from across the country, rotated through team-building activities on campus and technical training in nearby Nashville.

“The goal is to build leaders of character,” said Lt. j.g. Rachel Wright of Murfreesboro, one of the adult mentors guiding the experience. A veteran leader in the program, Wright added that the intensive curriculum gives young participants “a head start” toward scholarships and potential military careers.

Some cadets like 18-year-old Nina Dotres of Punta Gorda, Florida, have been working toward that future for years. “I wanted to be an actress, but this gave me purpose,” said Dotres, who plans to attend a prep school for the Merchant Marine Academy. “It’s tough, but pressure builds diamonds.”

Local residents also took part in the rigorous activities. Caleb Wren, 16, from Spring Hill, said the training not only enhanced his leadership skills but also made him physically stronger. “I want to join the U.S. Marine Corps,” he said proudly.

Instructors from the Metro Nashville Police Department led a master-at-arms class, while cadets tackled hands-on projects like constructing a damage control simulator for a leaking vessel. Graduation ceremonies were held at the MTSU Student Union and inside Jim Cummings Hall.

The Nashville-based Sea Cadet unit trains monthly at the Tennessee Army National Guard complex in Smyrna. For more about the program, visit www.seacadets.org
