New RCPLS Director Louanne James

Rutherford County, TN - After nearly a year and a half search, directors of the Rutherford County Library System (RCLS) announced the appointment of Luanne R. James as its new Library Director. Her first day on the job will be July 28, 2025. James will step into the role with more than 25 years of library leadership experience, bringing a strong background in strategic planning, data-driven innovation, and community-focused programming. James previously held leadership roles in library systems across Texas and South Carolina, most recently serving as a key administrator with the York County Public Library in Fort Mill. There, she spearheaded initiatives in grant management, systemwide evaluation, and long-range planning—areas of expertise she plans to bring to Rutherford County at a time when demand for library services continues to expand.

“We’re excited to welcome Luanne to both our system and the Murfreesboro community,” said Phil King, RCLS Board Chair. “Her proven leadership and passion for library innovation make her the ideal fit to guide RCLS into the future.”

As director, James will oversee six branches across the county, including Linebaugh Public Library in downtown Murfreesboro, MGL Library inside Patterson Community Center, the Technology Engagement Center (TEC), and the Historical Research Center—all within Murfreesboro—as well as public libraries in Smyrna and Eagleville. Her focus will include growing digital access, modernizing library spaces, and strengthening the role libraries play as educational, technological, and cultural hubs.

Rutherford County’s libraries remain pillars of community engagement—from hosting job-seeking workshops to offering early literacy programs. James’ arrival comes at a time when both traditional reading and tech-driven resources are in higher demand than ever, particularly among young families and adult learners across the county.

Library locations across Rutherford County:

  • Linebaugh Public Library – 105 W. Vine St., Murfreesboro
  • MGL Library (Patterson Community Center) – 521 Mercury Blvd., Murfreesboro

  • Smyrna Public Library – 400 Enon Springs Rd. W., Smyrna
