MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) — A loud boom startled residents near the intersection of West Castle Street and Hickerson Drive late Monday morning, but it wasn’t a blown transformer as originally reported.
Middle Tennessee Electric spokesperson Amy Byers clarified that the sound was the result of a fuse blowing during scheduled maintenance on a capacitor bank—not a transformer failure. The incident occurred around 11:15 a.m., briefly drawing attention from nearby residents and businesses.
Despite the loud noise, there were no power outages in Rutherford County. The Middle Tennessee Electric Outage Map showed no service disruptions as of 12:10 p.m., and any brief flickers experienced were part of the normal process during such maintenance.
Byers confirmed that the work was part of routine system upkeep to ensure continued reliability in the downtown area.
