MURFREESBORO, TN — The scent of smoked pork and the sounds of laughter and live music are making a triumphant return to Murfreesboro’s west side as the Blackman community gears up for the 71st Annual Blackman Barbecue this Friday, June 27. The Blackman Community Center dates back to 1947… That was longtime farmer and Blackman resident John L. Batey, reflecting on the barbecue's deep roots in the community..
After a multi-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, residents of the growing Blackman community are thrilled to welcome back one of the region’s oldest and most cherished traditions. The event, originally held at the historic Blackman Community Center, will once again be hosted at Lane Agri Park, located at 315 John R. Rice Boulevard, to accommodate the growing attendance. Doors open at 5:30 PM, with festivities continuing through 8:30 PM.
With attendance expected from across Rutherford County’s Blackman area, organizers say the event promises good food, warm fellowship, and enduring community spirit. Attendees will enjoy a traditional southern barbecue dinner for just $20 per ticket, available at the door.
That was former Rutherford County Deputy to the Mayor Steve Sandlin and County Commissioner Romel McMurry, both helping coordinate this year’s celebration.
A hallmark of the event is the awarding of at least two scholarships to deserving students, a tradition that continues to inspire local youth and support their futures.
The Blackman community has grown significantly over the years, now home to an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 residents, and with it, so has the demand for a bigger venue. While the event once comfortably fit within the walls of the Blackman Community Center, growth forced a relocation in recent years to Lane Agri Park — a venue that better fits both the crowd and the community spirit.
Few residents may know the fascinating origin story of the Blackman Community Club, the backbone of this event… John Batey told us… Eventually, the ladies raised enough funding to build their first clubhouse… The vacant public space, once home to the Blackman Academy, proved to be the perfect site for the future building, now known as the Blackman Community Center.
So, whether you're a longtime resident or a newcomer to this fast-growing part of Murfreesboro, come hungry and ready to reconnect.
