MURFREESBORO, TN - From new restaurants and shops to large-scale multi-use buildings, big changes are on the horizon for downtown Murfreesboro. Sarah Callender, Executive Director of Main Street Murfreesboro, recently told WGNS about some of the progress underway, with small business for the headline…

Callender highlighted a few of the latest stores that have opened their doors downtown, giving residents and visitors even more options for retail therapy… If you like good food, there are new restaurants in the downtown area that have either opened or will soon open within the weeks to come.

While retail and restaurant growth continues to build momentum, some larger projects are still in the planning stages. For example, the much-anticipated Keystone Project remains on hold as developers work through the necessary groundwork...

In addition to Keystone, another major proposal could dramatically change the local skyline. Kingdom Development Group, Inc. has pitched a 15-story mixed-use structure near the square at the intersection of Church Street and East Main. If approved and built, the development would include three levels of penthouse-style residential suites, a boutique hotel, a rooftop restaurant and bar, and an event venue. The proposed site covers the entire lot where Bank of America once operated a branch office, which is behind Shacklett’s Photography.

For now, these ambitious ideas exist mostly on paper as proposals for City Council, along with designs and blueprints — but if they come to life, they promise to bring new energy and economic growth to the city’s core.

A city project is about to pick up momentum. WGNS was told that the daylighting of Town Creek will soon get underway, now that properties have been cleared. Town Creek currently travels underground in culverts, starting at the Murphy Spring Wetland and ending next to Cannonsburgh Village on Front Street. The creek follows along NW Broad Street in the downtown area known as “The Bottoms.”

Don’t forget Friday Night Live this July, with a free concert in front of the historic Rutherford County Courthouse.
