Rutherford County, TN - As grills fire up across the state this summer, Rutherford County’s beef producers have even more reason to celebrate. Governor Bill Lee has officially proclaimed July 2025 as Beef Month in Tennessee, recognizing the vital role the cattle industry plays in the state’s economy, environment, and food supply.
Here in Rutherford County, beef farming is more than a tradition—it’s a way of life. Local operations like Shady Branch Beef, Butler Farms, Southland Beef, and SAM Farms are leading the charge, raising high-quality cattle with a focus on sustainability and community connection. These family-run farms supply everything from grass-fed cuts to Angus and Santa Gertrudis beef, often selling directly to consumers at the Rutherford County Farmers Market or through on-site farm stores.
Tennessee ranks ninth in the nation for the number of cattle farms, with over 1.6 million head of cattle and calves statewide. The state’s beef industry generates $5.2 billion in agricultural cash receipts annually, making it the second-highest grossing farm commodity. Rutherford County’s producers are proud contributors to those numbers, supported by organizations like the Rutherford Farmers Co-op, which provides feed, supplies, and expert guidance to local ranchers.
Governor Lee’s proclamation encourages Tennesseans to support local farmers by making beef the centerpiece of their summer meals. Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Hatcher praised the industry, saying, “Our cattle producers are the backbone of Tennessee agriculture”.
So whether it’s a juicy burger from a Murfreesboro farm or a steak sizzling on a backyard grill, this July is the perfect time to celebrate the hardworking families who keep Tennessee’s beef industry thriving—especially right here in Rutherford County.
