GILES COUNTY, Tenn. – A multi-agency investigation has led to the arrest of James and Kelli Hewitt, a Giles County couple accused of a disturbing list of crimes, including human trafficking for forced labor, involuntary labor servitude, multiple counts of animal cruelty, and aggravated animal cruelty.

According to the Giles County Sheriff’s Department, the arrests followed a lengthy investigation that involved the execution of search and arrest warrants. Authorities rescued eight individuals of various ages from the Hewitts’ property, placing them into safer environments. The victims are now receiving support and care.

The charges against the Hewitts include trafficking for forced labor, involuntary servitude, three counts of animal cruelty, and one count of aggravated animal cruelty. Officials noted that more victims may be identified, and additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.

The case represents a significant collaboration among 15 agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the IRS, the Department of Children Services, Giles County Emergency Services, Veterinarians, Animal Shelter, and others. Their joint efforts were instrumental in uncovering what the Sheriff’s Office described as “a major breakthrough.”

“We are extremely pleased with the recent developments in the investigation,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a release. “We remain committed to the prosecution of this case.”

Citizens with information about the case are urged to contact the Giles County Sheriff’s Department at 931-363-3505.
