Murfreesboro, TN - The Cripple Creek Cloggers and The Slim Chance Band are set to represent the United States on a global stage later this summer as they head to Santarém, Portugal, to perform at the Celestino Graca Festival—an international celebration of folk art and tradition. This marks the beginning of the troupe’s 59th year preserving the legacy of Appalachian-style square dancing with its signature clogging step. Widely known as Rutherford County’s cultural ambassadors, the group continues to share Middle Tennessee’s folk heritage with audiences far beyond the county lines.
The troupe was last invited to Portugal in 1981 and is thrilled to return, flying in through Lisbon where several members plan to explore the city’s rich history before heading to the festival. This year's gathering will feature folklore dancers and musicians from around the world, including seven troupes from Portugal and five international groups. Visitors can also enjoy agricultural fairs and performances across nearby towns.
Free Lessons
Locals curious about clogging can join the troupe on Sunday, September 14 at 4 p.m. for their first rehearsal and teaching session of the new season. Held at the Smyrna Senior Activity Center on Raikes Street, the event is open to all ages and counties in Middle Tennessee—no dance experience needed. Director Steve Cates, who founded the group in 1967 as part of a 4-H program at Kittrell School, continues to lead the troupe in performances dressed as 1840s Tennessee farmers, dancing to traditional fiddle tunes.
Travel, Have Fun, Meet People
From their early international outings—starting in Puerto Rico in 1977—to the founding of Murfreesboro’s own International Folkfest in 1982, the Cripple Creek Cloggers have built decades of cultural exchange. The 43rd Folkfest wrapped up just last month and featured performers from Poland, Estonia, Puerto Rico, and of course, our local stars. Plans are already in motion for next summer’s 44th edition, taking place June 7–14, 2026. Volunteers are welcome to join the planning committee and help continue this rich tradition.
