Murfreesboro, TN - A two-vehicle accident Friday afternoon (7/11/2025) at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Broad Street has renewed focus on Murfreesboro’s most hazardous intersections. The collision involved a black four-door compact SUV and a box delivery truck belonging to a local furniture store.
According to Murfreesboro Police spokesperson Larry Flowers, one person was injured in the crash. Details about the extent of the injuries have not yet been released.
This incident occurred at one of the 18 high-risk intersections currently under scrutiny by city officials and law enforcement. As part of a summer safety initiative, Murfreesboro police have ramped up patrols at these locations in an effort to combat reckless driving, including behaviors such as speeding, texting while driving, and running red lights.
Key intersections flagged for increased attention include:
- MLK Blvd at Broad Street — site of multiple serious crashes
- Veterans Parkway at Highway 99 — frequent multi-injury accidents
- Rucker Lane at Franklin Road — recent three-vehicle crash involving trapped passengers
The initiative includes visible patrol cars and unmarked units, both enforcing traffic laws and engaging with drivers to encourage better habits behind the wheel.
During a recent WGNS radio segment, Mayor Shane McFarland addressed the city’s traffic challenges:
“Our biggest problem is people running red lights,” said McFarland. “Our police force is now fully staffed, and plans are underway to have a team of officers dominantly handing out citations to offenders, and then move to another problem area.”
The mayor’s comments came just two days before Friday’s crash, though he did not reference this particular incident. He expressed hope that issuing fines for red light violations would deter motorists and promote safer driving citywide.
