National Tip Leads to Arrest in Aggravated Sexual Exploitation Investigation

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – An 18-year-old Murfreesboro woman, Sophia Carrier, has been charged with aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor following an investigation that began earlier this year. The case, now in the hands of local law enforcement, was first initiated after a tip was received by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in March.

According to court documents, the investigation is linked to a Snapchat account allegedly belonging to Carrier. Authorities say material involving child pornography, possibly including infants, was either viewed, shared, or received through the account on March 16, 2025.

After a thorough investigation, criminal warrants were issued and Carrier was arrested on Monday, July 14, by authorities in the Murfreesboro area. She remains in custody at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center.

Court records indicate that Carrier admitted to uploading and sending videos to others online. The material reportedly met the criteria under T.C.A. 39-17-1004, a Tennessee statute that prohibits the promotion, sale, distribution, or possession of sexually explicit material involving minors.

One media outlet reports that they received word indicating that the 18-year-old could have been working at a child care facility,  as noted by WSMV.

A hearing in Rutherford County General Sessions Court is scheduled for next month. From there, the case may be presented to a Grand Jury, which could determine whether additional charges or an indictment with multiple counts will follow.

Carrier faces serious legal consequences under Tennessee law, which deems it unlawful to knowingly engage in the distribution or possession of obscene material involving minors engaged in sexual or simulated sexual activity deemed patently offensive.
