Woodbury, TN - Local pride is swelling in Cannon County as one of its own prepares to shine on the national stage. John Buryl Neely, a young farmer and standout member of the Woodbury FFA Chapter, has been named one of just 16 finalists nationwide for the National FFA Organization’s most prestigious honor: the American Star in Agribusiness.
Chosen from over 1-million student members across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Neely’s nomination places him in elite company. He will represent Woodbury FFA later this fall at the 98th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis, where the four category winners will be announced on Friday, Oct. 31, 2025.
Neely’s journey to the top reflects years of dedication and hands-on experience through the FFA’s Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program—an initiative that allows members to apply classroom knowledge in real-world agricultural settings. His SAE centers on agribusiness, a category reserved for nonproduction entrepreneurship, and recognizes excellence in managing operations such as services, retail, or technology related to agriculture.
To reach this level, Neely met rigorous criteria that included:
- Operating and managing a successful agribusiness enterprise.
- Demonstrating advanced leadership through local and state FFA activities.
- Maintaining an exemplary scholastic record.
- Earning the American FFA Degree, the organization’s highest student achievement.
The American Star Awards honor those who’ve gone above and beyond in developing agricultural competencies and leadership. Finalists undergo interviews by a panel of judges during the convention, with one winner selected from each of the four categories: Agribusiness, Agriscience, Agricultural Placement, and Farmer.
Neely will compete Oct. 29–Nov. 1, 2025 in Indianapolis, as local supporters eagerly await the announcement of the Stars Over America. If selected, he would become not only a national winner, but a symbol of agribusiness excellence from Cannon County.
